"sm70- why not Duesenberg?" (sm70-whynotduesenberg)

For whatever reason, it seems like I see far more AMG Mercs than I do S/RS Audis and BMW ///M cars. I started out the weekend with a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , then found an !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , so of course you know where this is going. Here’s the S63 I found today, along with some other stuff that goes vroom.
Sorry for the shitty daschcam screenshot photos, but if you want better pictures of this 500E (and ones with its summer wheels on) !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
What I can’t offer any better pictures of is this, which said “426" on the hood and “Dodge” across the back, leading me to believe that this immaculate vehicle is in fact a 1964 Dodge Polara 500 with the 426 Max Wedge. Cool.

The BMW’s and Audis tend to hold their value decently enough. The AMG’s, especially the big ones, drop like stones.
This is just my casual observation.

Before you pick em up though, read up on your ABCs.

I laugh in the face of S63 owners because they are too poor to go full V12

My dad had an S430 at one point. Even though that was hardly the golden age of Mercedes, it was still a very fine vehicle.
Still, my tastes tend to be much smaller, lighter, and manual than a big merc, although if I had the cash for multiple vehicles I’d definitely have one in my dream garage.

Who ever said you should be smart when you buy a car anyway?

Let me put it this way; of the few people I know with S63/SL63/CL63 cars, all of them could afford to upgrade to the V12, but they decided that it wasn’t worth an extra $60,000-$100,000 to go marginally quicker, and break down and depreciate much faster.
TL;DR ever rich petrol heads use common sense sometimes.

Common sense is just a way to ruin fun. The V12 is an emotional decision though for sure. But as Leno says you should drive a V12 at least once a day.

I hear that. Some days I wish I had something like a Miata to throw around a bit. Maybe this summer...

I think that the AMG badge is used a bit too liberally.

I approve this message... And I definitely agree with the V12 being an emotional thing. I could have bought a really nice S500 with 4matic and also a Miata for the price of my S600 and forgone $3000 worth of repairs, but I wouldn’t have had my V12 dream car. For the emotional experience of waking up every morning to your dream car, I’d say the extra money is worth it.

Later on (early 1970's) the Polara became a wagon! You could get them with big HEMIs (they were big boats that needed big power to get around).
There’s a guy by me with a ‘73 Polara Wagon with the dual action tailgate. It’s brown and has rear facing 3rd row seats. I’m so super jelly of him.
I’m pretty certain the Polara wagon was the inspiration for a lot of the design and styling of the Magnum. You don’t have to look too hard to see that they definitely share many design features.

While I prefer the S65 to the S63, the S63 is actually a better car to drive. While both are absurdly heavy, the S63 feels a little bit tighter and sportier. It is also a little better on gas, which may not seem like a big deal, but people commute in these and don’t want to fill up every 3 days. Only every 4.
Also, S63 has AWD, so it’s a bit better when the roads are slick.

Couldn’t have said it better myself. If it a personal goal of mine to one day own a V12 so the extra money would make it worth it.

Like I said elsewhere in this post. It is an emotional choice and not a practical one. But you are correct on all points.
